HALLOWEEN

Halloween is a spooky holiday celebrated on October 31st.  People in North America and some people in Europe celebrate Halloween.  There are even Halloween parties in Korea!  So, where did Halloween come from?

It all started about 2,000 years ago in Britain.  First it was a Pagan harvest festival called Sowan.  They believed that ghosts and spirits came out this time of year.  They wanted to hide from the evil spirits so they dressed in costumes of dead people and ghosts.

Later, this holiday mixed with the Christian holiday called All Saints Day.  People would go to houses and ask for a Soul Cake, a kind of bread.  Many years later Halloween was born.

Now people celebrate Halloween in many ways.  Children wear costumes and go to houses and ask for candy.  This is called Trick-or-treating.  Adults often go to costume parties.  Many people also decorate their houses.  A common decoration is a jack-o-lantern.  It is a carved pumpkin that looks like a scary face.  People also go to haunted houses with friends and family.  These haunted houses are like very scary theme parks.  Watching horror movies is another fun Halloween tradition.

Common Halloween costumes are:  ghosts, vampires, zombies, scary masks, monsters, animals, witches, mummies, werewolves, and dead people.  What do you want to be for Halloween?

Spring is coming

1. Read the text and choose True (T) or False (F) statements:
Hi! My name is Helen and I’d like to tell you about my favourite season. It is spring, of course. Three spring months are very different. March is often cool and windy. April is the shortest of the three months and it is rainy sometimes. May is the warmest of all the three months and the most beautiful. The days are longer now and the nights are shorter.
Look through the window. What do you see? The sky is blue. The sun shines brightly and everything is bright and colourful. Snow melts and the birds return from the south countries. The first grass appears. We can see the spring flowers everywhere: tender snowdrops, yellow daffodils, tulips of different colours. The first green leaves appear from the buds. They are tiny at first and they glitter in the sun.  All the spring colours are very bright.
Spring is also the favourite season for gardeners. They prepare the land for planting the seeds of vegetables and flowers. They water the trees, the bushes and the plants.
Spring is also the season when we all celebrate the
greatest holiday – Easter.
True or False: 1. Spring is Helen’s favourite season.
2. Spring months are February, March and April.
3. It is usually cold in spring.
4. There are no flowers in spring.

5. The gardeners have a lot of work to do in spring.

3. Quiz:
1. What spring months have thirty – one days?
2. What is the shortest spring month?
3. What is the third spring month?
4. What spring month is the warmest?
5. What spring month is the coldest?
6. Can you name spring flowers?
7. What is the first spring flower?

Chilean Independence Day

On September 18, the entire country pretty much shuts down for a week or so come mid-September. Independence Day is on the 18th and the 19th is also a legal holiday in honor of the military.
The first signs of National Pride Frenzy begin to appear in early September when all the flag-colored red-white-and-blue decorations go up. Store workers begin to wear their September uniforms and dress up as huasos and huasas. School children practice their traditional dances and shop windows fill up with traditional little flowered huasita dresses for the girls and little black suits and chupaya hats for the boys. Most people hang the flag from their home. Flag display was mandatory during the military years and therefore fell out of favor for many years.
The weekend before the 18th kicks off the fonda season, during which the parks fill up with stands offering games, pony rides, music, dance, and plenty of traditional foods: empanadas, skewered meats (anticuchos), and choripanes (chorizo sausage sandwiches) and drinks, particularly chicha (a very sweet partially fermented grape juice which is almost-wine).
Overall production slows visibly the following Monday and declines steadily as the week wears on and the anticipation of the festivities gear up.
Fiestas Patrias is a celebration of family, friends, food, and tradition as much as it is about national pride. It is also a celebration of spring, and the newly blue skies fill with kites, the backyard grills fire up, and the patio furniture gets dusted off.
