Last summer, Joel and Sara
travelled to England for two weeks. They travelled in August and stayed in a
college with other students in Brighton, the South of England. It was really
fantastic because they talked to a lot of students of different nationalities
and learned a lot about other cultures and customs. Of course, they learned a
lot of English too because they practiced it every day. In the morning they
studied a little, they asked the teacher to speak slowly when necessary and
answered her questions. In the afternoon
they visited different places or played different sports at the college. It was
so much fun. They often walked down to the beach with their new friends and
played or chatted. In the evening they were tired so they sometimes watched
videos or played board games.
The best days were Saturday and
Sunday because they travelled to London. The city is very big and they visited
all the monuments like Big Ben, The London Eye and Buckingham Palace. They wanted
to see the Queen but they didn’t see her, only her guards!
They liked everything in the city
but their favourite thing was the museums, especially Madam Tussards. There
were lots of realistic figures of famous people there.
At the end of the two weeks, they were sad to return
home. The holidays were fun and different from usual. They cried a little when
they waved goodbye to their new friends and promised to write or send emails
when they arrived home.

Benjamin Franklin
Benjamin Franklin was an American printer and
publisher, author, inventor and scientist, and diplomat. He is best known for playing
a key role in the writing of the Declaration
of Independence and for signing the original United States Constitution.
Benjamin Franklin was born on January 17,
1706, in Boston. His father, Josiah Franklin, had seven children with first
wife, Anne Child, and ten more with second wife, Abiah Folger. Ben was his 15th
child and youngest son. He learned to read at an early age and was a good
student, but he stopped going to school when he was ten and started working
full-time. When he was twelve, he started working at his brother’s print shop. He
learned a lot about publishing and newspapers. In 1723, he moved to New York
and then to Philadelphia.
In Philadelphia, Franklin worked as a
printer. He wanted to start his own printing shop and travelled to London to
buy the things that he needed for it. In London, he had to work, but he also
had a lot of fun. He went to coffee houses and swam in the Thames. He returned
to America in 1726 and continued his printing activities. He also continued
studying. Franklin bought The Pennsylvania Gazette and made it one of the most
successful newspapers in America. In 1732, he started publishing Poor
Richard’s Almanack.
Franklin became one of the richest men in Pennsylvania. In 1748, he
moved into a new house and bought his first slaves. Later, he came to see that
slavery is evil and he freed his slaves in the 1760s. Franklin also became
interested in electricity and made some important scientific discoveries. He
also took part in politics. In 1776, he became one of the five men who wrote
the Declaration of Independence.
After the USA became independent, Franklin went to France as America’s first ambassador. He was very popular with French aristocrats.
After ten years in France, Franklin returned to America. He was politically
active and worked against slavery.
Benjamin Franklin died on April 17, 1790, in
Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, at the home of his daughter, Sarah Bache. His Autobiography got published in 1794.

Arthur Conan Doyle
Sir Arthur Conan Doyle was a Scottish writer
best-known for his creation of the detective Sherlock Holmes.
Arthur Conan Doyle was born on May 22, 1859,
in Edinburgh, Scotland. His parents were rich, but his father had problems with
alcohol. Doyle's mother, Mary, was a lively and well-educated woman who loved reading.
She told her son a lot of strange and interesting stories.
When he was nine, Arthur Conan Doyle started
studying at a Jesuit school in England. In 1876, he started studying medicine
at the University of Edinburgh. There he met Professor Dr. Joseph Bell, who had
excellent powers of deduction and who became the model for Sherlock Holmes. Doyle’s
classmates included future famous authors James Barrie and Robert Louis Stevenson.
Doyle
finished his medical studies in 1881. His first job was to work as a doctor
aboard Mayumba, a ship travelling from Liverpool to
Africa. After that, he lived in Plymouth and then in Portsmouth, where he
worked as a doctor. In 1885, Doyle met and married his first wife, Louisa
Hawkins. They had two children, a daughter and a son.
In 1886, Doyle started writing a story which
he would later publish as A Study in
Scarlet. This novel introduced readers to Sherlock Holmes and his
assistant, Dr. Watson. It was the first of about sixty stories about them and
it made Arthur Conan Doyle famous. During the 1890s and early 1900s, he
composed four of his most popular Sherlock Holmes books: The Sign of Four (1890), The
Adventures of Sherlock Holmes (1892), The Memoirs of
Sherlock Holmes (1894) and The Hound of Baskervilles (1901).
In 1906, Doyle's wife died of tuberculosis. A
year after her death, Doyle married Jean Leckie. They had two sons and a
daughter. In 1912, Doyle published The
Lost World, a story about Professor Challenger, who goes on an expedition
to South America and finds there living prehistoric animals. Doyle also wrote a
lot of books about spiritualism. In 1928, he published his final twelve stories
about Sherlock Holmes in a book called The
Casebook of Sherlock Holmes.
Sir

Burke and Hare – murderers!
Doctors haven’t always known what is
inside the human body. In the past, they didn’t know about the skeleton and the
organs of the body. They didn’t know how blood travels around the body. They
needed dead bodies to help them find out. They used to practise on the dead
bodies of criminals who had been hanged. However, in the 19th century, the supply dried up because not so
many people were being executed. Doctors turned to ‘grave robbers’ or ‘body
snatchers’.
In Edinburgh, Scotland, in 1828, two men
took this a step further! William Burke and William Hare murdered sixteen
people and sold the bodies to Dr Robert Knox. He dissected the bodies to
improve his knowledge of anatomy.
Finally, Burke and Hare were caught. Hare
made a deal and testified against Burke, who was hanged for his crimes. Hare
was sent to prison. Burke’s skeleton is
still on display at the medical school in Edinburgh.
A) In the past, why did doctors
need dead bodies?
B) Where did they get their supply
of corpses from?
C) What changed to make things
difficult for doctors who wanted to study anatomy?
D) Doctors turned to grave robbers
or body snatchers. Can you describe what these terms mean?
E) Where did Burke and Hare come
from?
F) How did they acquire bodies?
G) Who did they sell the bodies to?
H) Why did Robert Knox want bodies?
I) Did Hare claim that Burke was
innocent?
J) What happened to them both?
