The Texas Legislature Wants You To Stop Using The Chilean Flag Emoji

A state lawmaker filed a resolution this week urging people to think before they text and stop using an emoji of the Chilean flag, which resembles the Lone Star State flag, as a symbol of Texas pride.
State Representative Tom Oliverson described the resolution as a light-hearted but serious civics lesson for the social media age. More than a few people have garnished their tweets and text messages about Texas with a Chilean flag, he said.
“I designed it be educational, kind of like a public service announcement,” Oliverson, a Republican, told media.
His resolution does not carry the force of law.
It calls on lawmakers: “to reject the notion that the Chilean flag, although it is a nice flag, can in any way compare to or be substituted for the official state flag of Texas and urge all Texans not to use the Republic of Chile flag emoji in digital forums when referring to the Lone Star Flag of the great State of Texas.”
The Chilean flag is available on the standard set of emojis while the Texas flag is not.
Both flags have a single white star on a blue field on the left with a horizontal white stripe on top of a red stripe. On the Texas flag, the blue goes from top to bottom while on the Chilean flag, the red horizontal stripe stretches across the bottom.
The resolution generated statewide news on Friday with many offering their views on Twitter.
“For Pete’s sake, let the #txlege freshman pass his adorable little flag emoji bill,” political analyst Harold Cook tweeted.
Oliverson said the message to prevent flag confusion had been received.
“Even if the legislature decides not to hear it, we have achieved our objective,” he said.

HALLOWEEN

On October 31, Americans celebrate Halloween.
Halloween means “holy” (hallow) “evening” (een). This is the evening before the
Christian holy day of All Saints Day. On All Saints Day, Christians remember the
Saints but Halloween is even older than Christianity.

Before Christianity, people in Europe believed that on October 31
ghosts of dead people came back. To scare the ghosts, people dressed like devils
and were very noisy. They also made big fires to keep the ghosts away. Later,
people did not believe in ghosts, but they kept the day of Halloween for fun.

Immigrants came from Europe to America and brought with them the
custom of Halloween. Halloween has some strange symbols. One symbol is the
jack-o’-lantern in the window. The jack-o’-lantern is to scare the ghosts.
People cut the pumpkin, throw away all of the inside, and cut a face in it.
Then they put a candle inside of it.
Jack-o’-lantern usually look scary, too !

Today, in the United States, Halloween is very popular with the children.
They wear masks and special costumes. They want to
                                  look like skeletons and ghosts.

Then they go from house to house and say “ Trick or treat! “. People give them candies,
cookies or fruit. When people give nothing, the children sometimes play tricks on them.

Jasmine is at a birthday party today. Her best friend Betty is eight and she’s having a party at home with her friends. She has a long table with lots of food, there is pizza, sandwiches and fruit salad but Jasmine doesn’t want any of them. She takes a big  plate  with a hot dog and lots of fries. When she finishes that, she takes a plate with chocolate cake and ice-cream. During the party Jasmine eats a lot of sweets and has a big piece of birthday cake.
Jasmine’s mum comes at five o’clock when the party has finished. “Did you have a nice time?” her mum asks her. “Mmmm, yes but I don’t feel well now,” Jasmine replies, “I have a stomachache.”
“Oh dear,” says her mum, “I think you have eaten too much junk food.” “Yes, I shouldn’t have eaten so many sweets,” groans Jasmine. When she gets home, Jasmine goes straight to bed.
